The plant with snapping jaws!

Dionaea muscipula or the Venus fly-trap is an amazing plant. Charles Darwin had a keen interest in carnivorous plants and described the Venus flytrap as 'one of the most wonderful plants in the world' (Kew Gardens Website). This is because it is part of a small group of plants which can move upon touch! They attract prey (bugs) with their bright red leaf lining, and then the live bug triggers small hairs to snap the plant`s  leaves shut in less than a second! The leaves squash the bug but also digestive enzymes slowly digest the bug into a nutritious liquid for the plant to eat and live on.

Amazing as they are, they should not be sold or bought lightly. There are specific care instructions to carnivorous plants and should be followed to prevent them being a `throw-away plant`. Please read the instructions provided here!

DO NOT touch jaws to close without a bug as this reduce the lifespan of the plant.

Plant Care Guide

  • Light🌞: need a bright sunny space but not all direct light. Can also be kept outside in a sheltered but sunny spot and bring it in if temperatures plummet for some reason in spring and summer.
  • Water💧: keep damp but not sopping wet. Will need to be watered at least once per week or in a dish to top up with water. YOU CANNOT USE TAP WATER, DISTILLED OR RAINWATER ONLY. No misting but do like regular humidity of your home, no misting required.
  • Temperature🌡️: Warm for most of the year, can tolerate some cooler temperatures, but prolonged low temperatures will send it into dormancy. This dormancy is important for their long-term health. Like an animal in hibernation. They need about 3-4 months dormancy ideally. Drain off the excess water and pop it into a cool spot. Then start of February put in window or under daylight bulbs so they can come back.
  • Feeding🌱: no plant food. Needs live food not dead bugs. Can get some inside like fungus knats or small long-legged flies or ants. You can also catch some and feed it. No need to remove insects from traps.
  • Grooming🫶: A trap will likely die off after digesting the fly. Cut off any black traps as they are dead. Repot when over-flowing from the pot. No terracotta pots. Use Carnivorous soil mix. Ideally cut off any flowers as soon as you see them. Do not keep in a terrarium.
