This beauty/massage accessory derived from traditional Chinese medicine has been used for thousands of years. Its literal translation means “scratch” (gua) the “ailments” (sha), a healing technique that involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to stimulate blood flow and promote healing. Additionally, there is a growing body of scientific research supporting its benefits, particularly for pain relief, inflammation reduction, and immune system support.
- study (2017) demonstrated Gua Sha’s efficacy in reducing chronic lower back pain through better circulation and relaxation of tight muscles.
- Pain Medicine (2011) found that Gua Sha significantly reduced chronic neck pain compared to a control group after a single treatment.
- 2007 study found that Gua Sha therapy reduced levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-alpha in patients.
- 2017 study published in The American Journal of Chinese Medicine found significant pain reduction and frequency of migraine attacks.
- Gua Sha may be beneficial for women experiencing perimenopausal symptoms like hot flashes, anxiety, insomnia, and fatigue. A study published in Menopause (2017) found that women who received Gua Sha treatments experienced significant improvements.
